We would like to inform you of some important changes to the schedule of the LOT Winter School 2024.

Courses in week 2

Unfortunately, Jane Stuart-Smith has had to cancel her course on Sociophonetics during the LOT Winter School 2024. We understand that many students and PhD researchers were excited about this course, and we hope to be able to welcome Stuart-Smith during one of our future schools.

Luckily, the local organisation in Tilburg University have been able to arrange a valuable replacement course to fill up the empty slot in the time table: Auditory and visual prosody, taught by Tom Lentz and Marc Swerts (Tilburg University). This course deals with the way speakers modulate their (speech) prosody and their body language (such as facial expressions or gestures) to signal different aspects of communicatively and socially relevant information, and the effects these auditory and visual characteristics have on their addressees.

Research Discussion Groups

This Winter School also provides participants with the opportunity to engage in small-scale Research Discussion Groups (RDGs) with peers that are interested in the same topics. The hosts of the four groups have now been confirmed:

Week 2	Cornelia Müller (European University Viadrina Frankfurt)	Tessa van Leeuwen (Tilburg University)

Each group is hosted by one (pair of) lecturer(s), and is centred around the participants’ research and questions. The RDGs consist of presentations and discussions provided by the participants and regulated by the lecturer. Topics can be: research ideas/questions, methodology, experiments, specific problems, results (if obtained), progress, etc. Please note that it is not necessary to present research that is in an advanced stage. The goal is to provide the participants with feedback to enhance their research.

Each group will meet on Tuesday and/or Wednesday, depending on the number of participants.

Open to RM2 students

In earlier years, the RDGs were only intended for PhD researchers. However, for the upcoming Winter School we would like to invite motivated RM2 students to join as well, under the condition that the supervisor of their project provides a brief endorsement via email (to lot@uva.nl).
